According to the National Cancer Institute, immune cells collected from patients’ blood are genetically engineered to produce special receptors on their surface called chimeric antigen receptors (CARs), which allow the immune cells to recognize specific antigens on tumor cells. The approach - called adoptive cell transfer (ACT) - involves engineering patients’ own immune cells to recognize and attack tumors.

“The intersection of immunology and oncology represents one of the most promising approaches to delivering significant impact for patients with cancer,” said Sean Harper, executive vice president of Research and Development at Amgen. The collaboration brings together Thousand Oaks-based Amgen’s array of cancer targets and Kite’s work in autologous cell therapy, which uses an individual’s own cells to treat cancer. The therapy diverges from the cornerstones of cancer treatment, which have been surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
